Nature has always fascinated mankind with magnificent sights and wildlife. However, there have always been some bizarre, rare, and outright weird animals that have existed alongside the magnificent. From alien-looking squids to blood-squirting lizards, this article will surely surprise you with a list of 5 cool and weird animals, who have evolved many unique and weird bodily features.

1. Short-horned Lizard

Short-horned Lizards are found in North American semi-arid plains to mountains. They feed mostly on Ants but often hunt Grasshoppers and Beetles. They are “sit-and-wait” predators and heavily rely on their camouflage to hunt and hide from predators. Mostly active during the evening and burrowing by night, they usually avoid predators such as Canids (fox, coyotes, dogs). If provoked, the Short-horned Lizard will build up blood pressure and accurately shoot the Canid’s eye with a squirt of blood which deters their effort to hunt the Lizard since they have a strong distaste for blood.

2. Japanese Spider Crab

Japanese Spider Crab is a species of marine crab found in the seas near Japan. It has the largest leg span of any Arthropod (including spider, scorpion, and crab) reaching 3.8 meters or 12 feet. Female crabs can lay up to 1.5 million eggs per season which then hatch in 10 days on average. The Japanese Spider Crab is an omnivore consuming both plant matter and animals. They often scavenge the sea floor feeding on dead animals, plants, and algae and prying open the shells of mollusks.

3. Bigfin Squid

These are rare Cephalopods (including cuttlefish, octopus, and squid) that look straight out of an alien movie. Sightings of this Squid are rare as they live in the deep seas and it is not yet known what they feed on. They were first sighted and recorded in 1988 off the coast of Brazil but it was in 2001 when it was properly recorded and the species was brought to light. The tentacles and arms are extremely long and believed to be 4-8 meters or 13-26 feet long. There have been a dozen sightings of this rare deep sea Cephalopod.

4. Goblin Shark

The deep seas are filled with weird animals. One of which is the Goblin Shark. Often called a “living fossil”, it is the only species of the 125 million years old Mitsukurinidae family of Sharks. The body of this Shark is pink-skinned, and elongated flat snouts and jaws filled with nail-like teeth. Their short fins make them sluggish hunters and they mostly hunt Teleost fishes, Cephalopods, and Crustaceans near the seafloor as well as in the middle of the water column.

5. Glass Frog

These amphibians are found in Tropical forests and are arboreal meaning they live in trees and have a diet of insects and spiders. They appear lime greenish in color and are small in size. However, these species have translucent and transparent abdominal skin which makes their internal organs like the liver, heart, gastrointestinal tract, and even eggs in the case of females, see-through. They’re often hunted by snakes, birds, and wasps.

Mother Earth never fails to amaze us. For a very long time, it has preserved different kinds of living organisms. This article covered animals whose specifications and way of living make you think that these animals have evolved to survive in the wild.
