About Democracy
Democracy is a form of government that is elected by the people, for the people, and from the people. In a democracy, the government works on the basis of the rights of the people and the constitution. If the government is not working properly, a person can give a vote to other governments after a fixed period of time (5 years in India).
Countries that call themselves democratic but are not democratic
We say democracy is the best form of government because it is far better than another form of government i.e. monarchy, autocracy, and dictatorship. Though some countries are called democratic but are not democratic like-
- In Pakistan General, Parvez Musharaf made himself a chief executive. When he got more power, he changed his designation to the president and pass a referendum that granted him a 5-year extension. In 2002, a law was passed by him changing the constitution that a president had the right to dismiss national and provincial assemblies. Till then, Pakistan was in dictator rule i.e. army rule.
- Let's take another country. In China, there is only one party named Zhōngguó Gòngchǎndǎng i.e national communist party. If a person wants to oppose the party, he must have permission from National Communist Party and its allies. Again this country called itself a democratic country but its an autocratic.
- In Zimbabwe, elections happened every 6 years, and also it doesn't have any king's rule i.e. it was not a monarchy but every time, a party ZANU-PF always won. It is popular the whole worldwide but does anyone know his leader, Robert Mugabe used dirty tricks to win elections. He pressurized opposition parties and interrupted meetings formed by them. He even pressurized judges whose orders were against him.
By these examples of countries that call themselves a democracy but not democratic, we now know that not all countries were or are democratic. by these examples, we found some features of democracy.
