Hello Guys! I am back with a Mexican dish with an Indian twist.

Many of you people might have tasted the snack named 'Taco Mexicana'

It is widely sold at Domino's Pizza restaurant. I have tasted mine from Dominoes.

For those unfamiliar with 'Taco Mexicana', it is a Mexican folded corn or tortilla bread filled with various types of fillings.

Due to the covid-19 pandemic, people hesitate to eat food from outside. Instead, people are being creative and experimenting with food. I too tried to make a dish and I would like to name it "The Desi Taco". It might sound stupid and funny, but trust me it is really tasty!

First of all, Let me share with you the list of items to make this dish. It's a very easy recipe and will be made with an optimal number of items that are easily available at your home.

The list of ingredients are-

1) 2-3 potatoes

2) 2 onions

3) 3-5 Chapatis (leftover / Newly cooked)

4) Ginger garlic paste

5) Cumin seeds - 1 tsp

6) Coriander powder - 1 tbsp.

7) Garam Masala - 1 tbsp.

8) Red Chilly powder (Optional)

9) 1-2 mini cubes of butter (Optional)

10) 3-4 slices of cheese (Preferred)/2-3 cubes of cheese

11) Red chilly flakes ( Optional)

12) Oregano seasoning (Optional)/ chopped coriander leaves

13) Pizza Sauce (preferred)/ Tomato sauce

The Filling

Now, after we grab all the ingredients, we are all set to make the very tasty “Indian Taco”

  1. First of all, put the potatoes inside a pressure cooker and let it cook until it's completely boiled and becomes soft and easily mashable.
  2. Slice the onions into small thin slices.
  3. Once your potatoes are cooked completely, take 2-3 drops of oil in a big bowl and mash the potatoes in that bowl. Add some salt, coriander powder (1 tbsp.), garam masala (1 tbsp.), red chilly powder – 1/2 tsp. (it is optional, but adding a little bit would surely add to its amazing taste.), red chilly flakes- 1 tsp. (optional) and oregano seasoning – 1/2 tsp (If you do not have this, then you can add chopped coriander leaves).
  4. After adding all these, mix it properly so all the ingredients blend with each other completely.

The Chapatis

  1. For this, we need 3-5 chapatis. You can use leftover chapatis or you can also use newly cooked chapatis too.
  2. Take a pan and put some butter on it. Take the chapatis and cook them on both sides(1 min for each side) for 2 mins. Do the same for all the chapatis and keep them aside.

Cooking the filling

  1. Put a small amount of butter in the pan and stir fry the onions along with 1 tsp cumin seeds. Add a pinch of salt to it for making the process of cooking faster. You need to cook the onions until they are brown in color.

Trivia time: Till the time the onions are being cooked, I want to share some facts about Taco. I won’t let you feel bored in the idle time.

  • You would be surprised to know that tacos are really very old, created somewhere between 1000 B.C. and 500 B.C.
  • The Americans eat a lot of tacos, around 4.5 billion every year. Whoa! That’s huge.
  • The biggest taco in the world was 246 feet long. Can you imagine that?

Don’t get too deep in the facts else I will get scolded for your burnt onions ;-)

Let’s get back to the onions now.

       2. When the onions have turned brown, add the ginger-garlic paste and cook for 1-2 mins on medium flame.

       3. Then Add the mashed potato mixture into the pan, mix it properly with the onions and ginger-garlic paste and cook for around 2-3 mins. Take out all the fillings from the pan and keep them in a bowl.

The Final Part

Take the chapatis, On one half, spread some sauce, small pieces of cheese slice or grated cheese then add the filling and cover it with the other half of the chapati. Do the same for the rest of the chapatis.

Put some butter on the pan. Put the chapatti taco on the pan and let it cook until both the sides of the chapatti become crispy (you should flip the chapatti once for the other side to cook) and golden brown in color. Do the same for all.

Now take out all the tacos on a plate. You can serve it with sauce or green chutney according to your convenience.

Your “The Indian Taco” is ready to eat. Don’t waste a minute and jump on the tacos and enjoy them.

You might be feeling that the recipe is too long. Trust me, it might look long but it is actually easy and divided into small parts. Don’t worry and give it a try. You won't regret it.

Enjoy your meal and do share your opinions about this lockdown dish of mine and about your experience with this dish.
